Seen with Dignity: A Guest’s Story at Mercy Cross
Mercy Cross Center was created to be a safe, welcoming day resource center dedicated to serving individuals experiencing homelessness along the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Rooted in our Catholic faith and the call to serve Christ in those most in need (Matthew 25:35-40), Mercy Cross exists to be a place of refuge, dignity, and hope for our brothers and sisters facing housing instability and life on the streets.
As Mercy Cross Day Center marks its second anniversary, we give thanks for the countless lives that have been touched through its mission of accompaniment, dignity, and hope.
Since opening its doors, Mercy Cross has become more than a resource center for those experiencing homelessness; it has become a place where people are welcomed, listened to, and reminded of their God-given worth. One guest, reflects the impact that compassionate service and genuine human connection can have in someone’s life.
“When I come to Mercy Cross, I am treated with dignity and respect. The staff, volunteers, and everyone who works here treat people the right way-always respectfully, always willing to help. If something is important, they will stop what they are doing to help you. No one speaks down to you, and even when something negative happens, emotions don’t dictate how they respond.
What makes Mercy Cross different is that they see me as a human being. They don’t try to treat everyone the same. They pay attention to who they are talking to and take the time to listen.
They talk things through, give meaningful help, and provide real answers. Here, I am not just anybody—I am a person.
Before coming to Mercy Cross, I didn’t feel like anyone cared about me as a person. I felt like I was just there, without anyone truly paying attention or wanting to help me move forward. I was angry, lost, and confused, and honestly, 1 was despondent. I was surrounded by people and situations that didn’t encourage growth or hope.
The first day I came to Mercy Cross, I was confused about why the staff wanted to help me.
Then it felt like the sun came out from behind the clouds. For the first time in a long time, I felt hope. Because of Mercy Cross, I’ve gotten a lot done, and now I can see a path forward. My outlook on life has become more positive, and I feel more grounded.
I know I haven’t been a perfect person, but the staff here still allowed me to regain my dignity.
Even when they correct me or push me, it’s not out of anger —it’s because they care.
People come to Mercy Cross for the peace. They come to get things done, to not be blown off or ignored. What you find here isn’t just professionalism —it’s service rooted in love.
When you’re homeless and have nothing, sincerity means everything. In a world where lying. stealing, and disappointment are everyday realitics, the true kindness and honesty at Mercy Cross make a lot of the bad things fade away, even if just for a moment. Mercy Cross made me believe that things can be different and that maybe one day, they will be.”
