The Altar of Saint Joseph: A Beautiful Tradition in the Catholic Faith

51

Each year on March 19, the Catholic Church celebrates the Solemnity of Saint Joseph, the humble and steadfast guardian of the Holy Family. One of the most beautiful and meaningful traditions associated with this Solemnity is the creation of the Altar of Saint Joseph. This centuries-old tradition is a profound expression of faith, gratitude, and community.

The purpose of the Altar of Saint Joseph is twofold: thanksgiving and charity. Historically, it began as a way to thank Saint Joseph for his intercession during a time of famine in Sicily. In gratitude for answered prayers, families prepared altars adorned with food, especially bread and pastries, to share with the less fortunate. Today, the altar continues to be a symbol of generosity and a reminder of God’s providence.

Typically, the altar is filled with beautifully arranged breads, fruits, vegetables, and symbolic items like lilies, which represent Saint Joseph’s purity. Special pastries shaped as crosses, doves, and other religious symbols are lovingly prepared, and the altar often serves as a gathering place for prayer and celebration.

At Sacred Heart Church, we have been celebrating this beautiful tradition every year. It has been a wonderful event to bring parishioners together and the students at Resurrection Catholic Elementary School (RCES).

The Solemnity of Saint Joseph is an opportunity to teach students of all ages about this beautiful tradition, which is so important! It helps them connect with the rich heritage of the Church, understand the power of generosity, and recognize the importance of helping those in need. By learning about the Altar of Saint Joseph, students grow in their understanding of how faith and action go hand in hand, inspiring them to live with compassion and kindness.

Let us continue to share this tradition with younger generations, ensuring that the legacy of faith, gratitude, and charity remains alive for years to come.

Special thanks to the Swafford Family for helping to coordinate this important event for the past few years at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Pascagoula. Thank you to all the parishioners who are involved every year in putting together the Altar of Saint Joseph.

Saint Joseph, Terror of Demons, pray for us!
