Faith and Fraternity at the Knights of Columbus State Convention
Each year the Knights of Columbus members in the state of Mississippi gather for their annual State Convention. This event brings together those Catholic men in a spirit of faith, fraternity, and service. This year’s event was held on the weekend of April 24–26 at the Natchez Convention Center in Natchez, Ms. The convention served as both a business meeting and a celebration of the Order’s mission in Mississippi.
The convention was led by the Mississippi State Deputy Kenny J. Gonzales and his officers. This year’s theme, “Knights Navigating the Way,” reflects the ongoing commitment of the Knights to guide their communities through acts of charity, unity, and faith. Delegates representing local councils from across Mississippi convened to discuss initiatives, vote on resolutions, and elect state leadership. The convention also provided an opportunity to recognize outstanding councils and individuals whose service has made a significant impact on their parishes and communities.
At the Convention Gala, it was announced that State Chaplain Rev. Michael P. Austin, Pastor of Holy Family Parish in Pass Christian, had received the National Blessed Michael McGivney Award from the National Supreme Council, accorded to a Knights of Columbus Chaplain for their service and ”whose priestly zeal and exemplary service are in the finest tradition of our founder.”
Our own Bishop Louis F. Kihneman III, joined with Bishop Joseph R. Kopacz, of the Diocese of Jackson, Ms. to address the convention. The Bishops were thankful for and highlighted the importance of the work of the local councils. The Bishops encouraged all the councils to take on the task of Evangelization. They reminded all to go out and use their positions in the community to make Disciples of Jesus. Bishop Kihneman concelebrated with Fr. Mike Austin and Fr. James Smith, at the Memorial mass on Saturday morning, in a beautiful service remembering those Knights who had passed away during the year. Bishop Kopacz celebrated the Convention Closing Mass on Sunday morning. Both Masses were celebrated at the historic St. Mary’s Basilica.
