Black History: “A Place at the Table” African – Americans on the Path to Sainthood

Parishioners and guests from neighboring parishes were participants in a Black History celebration at St. Rose de Lima Church on Sunday, February 16, 2025.  Members from Our Mother of Mercy, St. Theresa and St. Peter parishes all convened to give cause for the canonization of six (6) black Catholic men and women.  The theme: “A Place at the Table”.

Mistress of Ceremony, Florence Jordan introduced musician Jamion Burney who kicked off the program with a rendition of “Lift Every Voice”, followed by Le’ Bria Williams’ opening prayer and the introduction of the clergy members present.

Ms. Sherry Hill sang “Living Proof”, followed by Welcome from Gwen Lawyer of Generations of Faith.  Brother Friday Onoja served as Magistrate.  The youth from all the parishes gave separate presentations honoring the Venerables.   The liturgical dance group was a collaboration between Our Mother of Mercy and St. Rose de Lima dancers, which was expertly choregraphed by Mrs. Marion Brewer.  The grandmother, daughter,  and granddaughter trio of Darlene Lee, Chari Lee and Leah Morris offered a musical selection before closing remarks by St. Rose Parish Pastor, Father Anil Thomas, SVD and Youth Minister, Rhonda Labat.   

Following the program all participants and congregants gathered in the St. Rose Holy Spirit Center for fellowship and a delicious meal prepared by ‘Eh Labat Catering.  It was a beautiful afternoon with a definite purpose.
